This month, meet David Sengeh, Harvard College Class of 2010, and one of his mentors, David Edwards, Gordon McKay Professor of the Practice of Biomedical Engineering.
This summer, Sengeh is collaborating with a team of fellow Harvard students determined to “light” sub-Saharan Africa using microbial fuel — or ‘dirt-powered’— cell-based lighting systems. The team was awarded a $200,000 grant from the World Bank to realize the project.
Join the conversation and tell us about a professor who changed the course of your time at Harvard.

This is indeed an inspirational initiative, and it leads one to wonder what other benefits to humankind we can unlock from the brain trust at Harvard (and other institutes of higher education). It also highlights the important concept of “translation” as mentioned by Prof. David Edwards - taking the knowledge of scientific discovery and translating it into applications with a significant (and higher) level of impact on people and society. It is good to know that today’s Harvard students are thinking big, and that the faculty are encouraging this type of innovation and initiative. Well done to David, David and the team, and please keep us updated on the project.
